What is wrong with taking freelance payments in USDT or crypto?
Last reviewed: 15 October 2026
Short answer
Crypto transactions are not permitted in Bangladesh, so crypto earnings have no lawful route into taka. Bringing income through legal banking channels gives you legal protection, incentives and proof of income.
Full answer
Many foreign clients like to pay in crypto. But if you live in Bangladesh, there are several problems:
- No lawful route into taka: selling crypto through banks or mobile financial services is prohibited, and informal trades carry fraud and frozen-account risk. See P2P fraud.
- Foreign exchange rules: foreign exchange law expects income earned abroad to come home through legal channels.
- No proof of income: remittance records in a bank help with loans, visas and tax returns. Crypto earnings leave no such record.
- Price risk: apart from USDT, crypto payments can change in value within days.
The safe option is to ask clients to pay by bank transfer or through a legal payment service.
